THE PROBLEM

A growing skills gap has led to an underdeveloped workforce and declining economy in Nigeria as “employment ready” skills such as creativity, critical thinking and problem solving are largely absent in graduates entering the workforce. Companies have to bear the responsibility and cost of retraining and ups-killing employees to bring them up to international standards. Contributing factors include:

  • Decline in the quality and lack of investment in education:
  • Digitization and tech advancement changing traditional jobs and required skills set
  • Gender disparity in  education with 5.5 million girls out of school in Nigeria

Overall outcome:

  • Low level skills set means access to low paying jobs
  • Lack of diversity and untapped potential in national talent pool
  • Socio economic impact on families and communities
  • Trapped in the poverty cycle and reduced economic mobility
